H&J Martin have picked up the Building Conservation accolade at this year’s RICS Grand Final in London for their restoration project at Mount Stewart.
Located on the banks of Strangford Lough in County Down, Mount Stewart is an 18th Century building with major historical relevance dating back to include housing the World War II war cabinet and residence for Royalty.
The prestigious RICS award recognises conservation work carried out by H&J Martin on behalf of the National Trust as part of a three-year refurbishment scheme which involved vital repair and restoration works to protect the unique heritage of Mount Stewart and safeguard its tourist attraction status in Northern Ireland.
Judges said the project used “highly innovative” techniques to “repair serious structural defects throughout the property”. The judges were further impressed by the “clear collaboration in pioneering the approach of undertaking the works whilst maintaining the building open to the public with the highly successful outcome of increasing visitor numbers and visitor experience.”
