Charles Brand currently have a team delivering work in Scotland and with recent growth in the region we want to establish a team based in Scotland.

We have already delivered several schemes in Scotland including:

  • Inchcape: Cable landing facility in Cockenzie £10m
  • Edinburgh Airport: Resurfacing and ground lighting £10m
  • Lossiemouth Waste Water Treatment Facility and outfall £24m

We have recently been awarded:

  • Corran Ferry Port Infrastructure works near Fortwilliam £26m
  • Peel Ports Framework - Lot 2SC - Scotland Marine Construction - Glasgow and Strathclyde

Role Overview 

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Civil Engineering Contracts Manager to join Charles Brand for projects in Scotland. This role holder will be responsible for overseeing the management of the projects to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of the Projects and lead the team within Charles Brand values and guidelines, while adding value and development to the Charles Brand Business. The candidate will also need to support the work winning function of the business and be able to undertake Client engagement meetings, track opportunities and support tender submissions. The role holder will be responsible for growth within Scotland with the opportunity for career development and promotion.

What you'll do

The following reflect the main tasks associated with your position and are not intended to be exclusive or exhaustive:

  • Provide leadership, oversight and support to construction teams to ensure all projects are properly resourced and delivered safely, on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.
  • Communicate project objectives, requirements and stakeholder expectations clearly, ensuring full understanding across all project participants.
  • Lead, motivate and guide internal site teams as well as external consultants and supply chain partners involved in project delivery and tender support activities.
  • Champion excellence in safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ), promoting continuous improvement and ensuring all statutory and company requirements are met.
  • Ensure all projects operate in full compliance with Charles Brand policies, procedures and delegated authority levels.
  • Lead, review and challenge project budgets, forecasts and financial performance to achieve a robust, deliverable and commercially sound approach.
  • Advise the Managing Director on project scheduling, progress, risks and opportunities, and present clear action plans and updates to key clients and stakeholders.
  • Oversee legacy projects to close-out, ensuring defects, warranty items and bond obligations are completed efficiently.
  • Identify work-winning opportunities, collaborating with the Director to engage effectively with clients.
  • Support tender submissions with programme advice, technical input, buildability reviews and local supply chain insights.
  • Provide expert support to project teams, applying a strong understanding of construction processes, technology and delivery methods.
  • Implement the Business Management System and ensure robust monitoring, control processes and compliance with all legal and statutory project requirements.
  • Allocate competent and appropriate resources to project management activities to ensure successful delivery.
  • Promote and drive service excellence, best practice and continuous improvement initiatives across all projects.
  • Coach, mentor and motivate project teams, setting clear expectations and leading by example.
  • Apply an effective performance management framework to maximise team capability and outcomes.
  • Ensure all construction projects are designed, constructed and certified to the required technical, legal and safety standards.

What you’ll bring
As a Contracts Manager, your main skills and experience will include:

Essential:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management related subject
  • Substantial experience as a project manager within a Civil Engineering environment
  • Ideally previous experience as a Contract Manager
  • Ideally professionally qualified or working towards a professional qualification
  • Previous experience of work winning activities
  • Proven Track record of leading large and complex Civil Engineering Projects
  • Sets strategic direction and maintain sufficient awareness of detail and challenges
  • Good understanding of NEC (Various) Form of Contract
  • Experience of leading, managing and motivating large project teams in demanding environments
  • Ability to monitor performance and intervene appropriately to ensure targets are achieved and exceeded
  • A good understanding of elements necessary to deliver effective supply chain management and support across the organisation
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required to manage a team and for relationships with Clients
  • The ability to motivate, lead and engage diverse teams with due consideration to employee development, succession and performance management.
  • The ability to operate effectively and harness results through cross-functional teams.
  • Good management skills, with the ability to motivate employees to achieve high standards of compliance
  • A strong communicator, comfortable interfacing with senior executives and external clients
  • IT literacy
