This Design and Build Civil Engineering project involved the construction of 2,000m of permanent access roads/pedestrian walkways and 6 hectares of heavy-duty hard standings comprising 470mm CBGM pavement and brick paviours adjacent to the fully operation Berth3 in London Gateway.

We utilised our in-house concrete batching plant to produce c28,500m3 CBGM on site. This allowed us to maintain high levels of quality in the CBGM as this has been inherently problematic in London Gateway and indeed other commercial ports. Our stringent quality procedures ensured that all CBGM trials were successfully certified and facilitated ‘correct first time’ CGBM pavement to be constructed with our in-house resources (plant and labour), with minimal defects on completion.

The enabling works included a reduced dig and mass haul of 80,000m3 of existing surcharge material and the construction of a 150m long cantilevered sheet pile retaining wall, retaining at its maximum 2.5m of existing surcharge material.

We installed over 2,500m of 150mm diameter drainage which currently discharges into a temporary lagoon. This temporary drainage solution was required because DP World are planning to commence works on the adjacent new Berth 4. The levels of our new drainage system is required to tie into the proposed Berth 4 drainage.

Our site wide drainage system incorporated a central 960m long bespoke precast culvert (500mm x 900mm). Our culvert discharges into the River Thames via a head wall and tideflex valve. To accommodate these works we were required to excavate and reinstate the existing rock armour revetment. Secondary Rock Armour was 300 - 600Kg and the Primary Rock Armour ranged from 3T to 6T.
