Safe Working at Beddington ERF helps to reward Local Hospice

20 Jun 2016

St Raphaels Hospice in Sutton has received a donation of £1,000 thanks to safe working practices at the Beddington Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) construction site.

Viridor and it’s construction partners Lagan Construction Group, CNIM and Fichtner were delighted to mark the achievement of reaching 100,000 working hours without a reportable incident at the site in South London.

Health and safety is a top priority at the site and in recognition of reaching this significant milestone, construction workers were given the opportunity to choose a local charity to receive the £1,000 donation. The workers decided the money should go to St Raphaels Hospice; a charity based in Sutton caring for those facing life-threatening illness in the communities of Wimbledon, Merton, Sutton and Cheam.

"We are delighted that the construction project at Beddington has been able to reach this milestone. Doing the maths, it would take an average person over 50 years to accumulate this figure and reaching it safely and therefore making this kind donation has enabled us to continue provide skilled medical care in a supportive and comfortable atmosphere in Sutton. When terminal illness strikes, it is often a most distressing time, enabling us to continue working with the community gives great comfort to those whom we serve.”
Sheelagh McCarthy, Deputy Director of Fundraising for St Raphael’s Hospice

Once operational in 2018, the £205m Beddington ERF will safely transform non-recycled waste from the four London Boroughs which make up the South London Waste Partnership into 26 MW of electricity – enough to power the facility itself plus around 30,000 homes. A leading driver for the development is the Partnership’s aspiration to increase recycling, divert all of the remaining waste from going to landfill and recover energy from what remains in a sustainable and cost-effective manner.

The construction project is developing well, with the foundations nearing completion and steel work now visible. Over the summer months, the project will create more than 400 local jobs and deliver significant local spending on a wide range of items and labour; a number of local businesses including 777 Demolition and Haulage Ltd are already supporting the project.
